The Elle Macpherson Story: A Case of Selective Disclosure

Elle Macpherson’s breast cancer story, with the launch of her book, has gained significant media attention this past week. In her account, Macpherson describes turning down conventional cancer treatments in favour of a holistic, “heart-led” approach. What’s crucial, though, is what has been left out or barely mentioned: her decision to undergo a lumpectomy—a conventional and surgical breast-conserving medical procedure to remove localised cancerous tissue with a wider area of healthy tissue. Many reports failed to mention this pivotal fact, and the sequence of her treatments remains unclear. This omission misleads readers, leaving the impression that her recovery was solely due to alternative therapies.
